Mary Kirby MARY KIRBY was born on the 22nd April 1897 in Barrassie Street, Troon at 04.30PM (ref 590/2 53). Her birth was registered by her mother on the 12th of May 1897.She was the seventh of nine known children born to John Kirby and Elizabeth Taylor of Troon. Her birth was registered by her mother. It is not known who Mary was named after as Mary is not a common name in either family. At the time of her birth she had two or perhaps three sisters living, Lucy Elizabeth Kirby, perhaps aged 10, and Elizabeth Taylor Kirby aged 6 and Christina Kirby aged 4. Further children were born after Mary. Jessie Wilson Kirby was born on the 1st of June 1899 when Christina was 6 year old James Parker Kirby was born on the 1st of June 1901 when Christina was 6 year old on the 22nd of July 1901. However James died in infancy on the 28th September 1901 of Acute Lobal Pneumonia, for 2 Days However, the biggest change in Christina's life would be the death of her mother Elizabeth Taylor on the 11th of December 1901 of Heart Disease, Mistral Steurosis and Regurgitation. What happened to all the children after this point is not certain although it is claimed that their Auntie Christina, presumeably one of the Taylor Family, looked after them. This information came from Betty McTurk. However John Kirby seems to have distanced himself from them. He went to marry Jane Miller on the 31st July 1903. Jane knew John had children but seems to be unaware they were living in Scotland, almost under her nose. Mary became a domestic servant and by 1919 was working at Redgarton, South Park Rd, Ayr. She married Hugh McTurk on the 5th of December 1919 in 29 Bellevue Road Ayr. Banns According to Church of Scotland (Ref 1919 578/1 340). The marriage was witnessed by John McTurk and Jessie W Kirby. Hugh was son of James McTurk and Elizabeth McCormack. He was born in 1885 in Ayr. On the marriage certificate John Kirby's, her father, occupation had been elevated to John Kirby, Shipmaster. They had one child, Elizabeth Taylor McTurk in 1920.
