The Kemp family

of

Stratford upon Avon

There is a bit of a problem however here, Thomas Kirby and Anne Reeves married on the 7th of August 1785. However there is no record of them having any children until 1790. Five years without children, having just got married in these times is unusual. Their marriage at Batsford is somewhat unusual as it is the only Kirby record found there even though it is very close to Moreton. It could be that Anne Reeves was from Batsford and it was quite usual for a marriage to take place at the brides church. There is no reason why they should be living there after 1785, perhaps they moved elsewhere temporarily.

In the Will of Joseph Kirby, one of the beneficiaries is Mary Kemp which identifies her as his niece. It is known that another Joseph Kirby, his nephew, was the son of Thomas Kirby, his brother. It is probable under these circumstances his brother Thomas was already deceased as were his other brothers and sisters, unless there had been a family dispute or lost contact where some had moved away. It is believed that Mary Kemp nee Mary Kirby was born in 1786 and this is born out in the 1851 Census in Stratford, where her age is given as 65.

Mary Kirby married William Kemp on the 25th of October 1805 at Moreton in Marsh. She is believed to be the daughter of Thomas Kirby and Ann Reeves, and although it makes sense, there is currently no proof only the suggestion from the Will of Joseph Kirby, who was certainly her Uncle.

THE KEMP FAMILY

The marriage of William Kemp to Mary Kirby makes the link of the Kirby’s to the Kemp’s interesting.

John Kemp and Elizabeth, were William Kemp’s parents, probably born around 1750. They had five known children,

By 1851 there were no children living at home in Greenhill Street, Old Stratford. William Kemp’s occupation was a Gardener which is in keeping with many of the Kirby’s. He was 69 and his wife aged 65.

Although we cannot be sure two other clues make Mary Kirby (Kemp) the daughter of Thomas and Anne Reeves. Their first son was named John after Williams father, the second, after Mary’s father and the first daughter after Mary’s mother. Unusually there does not appear to be a William as a son. However there are big enough gaps in the birth dates for this to have happened.
