HUGH MCTURK

HUGH MCTURK was born in 1885 in Ayr. He is believed to be the son of James McTurk and Elizabeth McCormack. His father suffered from something like Motor Neurone Disease. was an Engine Driver but did not work for twenty five years because of illness. Hugh is believed to be the eldest of six children the others being:-

Hugh worked at Dickies Stamp works as an Iron Turner and lived at 21 McCalls Avenue in Newton on Ayr.

He married Mary Kirby on the 5th of  December 1919 in 29 Bellevue Road Ayr. The Banns were according to Church of Scotland (Ref 1919 578/1 340). The marriage witnesses were John McTurk, presumably Hugh's brother and Jessie W Kirby, Mary's sister. On the marriage certificate Mary's father is shown as "John Kirby, Shipmaster".

Hugh and Mary had a daughter Elizabeth Taylor McTurk born in 1920.  However Mary died on the 11th of July 1920 at 21 McCalls Ave, Ayr at 9.05 am (Ref 1920 578/1 281). The Cause of Death was a Puerperal Pulmonary Embolism following confinement on the 30th of May 1920. Mary's death was reported by Hugh as being present at the death and registered on the 12th of July1920 . Burial took place on the14th of July 1920, Ayr Cemetery Holmston Road. Layer E1648.

Following Mary's death Hugh never remarried. He went to stay in Glasgow with the Graltons, Mary's sister, from time to time.

Hugh died in December 1946 and was buried on the 21st of December 1946 at Ayr Cemetery Holmston Road, Layer E1648 next to his wife Mary.
